Fake district attorney call is a scam, police say

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department detectives are warning residents about yet another local telephone scam.

Officers have received reports about people being contacted by someone pretending to be a representative from the "District Attorney’s Office in Indianapolis" via telephone.

The caller has been reported to say that he has personal information about the victim and then says the person owes a large amount of money. The victim is told to pay a portion of the amount immediately or risk being arrested.

The sheriff’s department said residents should be very protective of their personal information and that these calls have been coming from area code 786.

Anyone who is contacted is urged to simply tell the caller that you are not interested and will be contacting your local law enforcement agency, and then hang up. Detectives report they are unaware of anyone who has actually sent in any money.
