Champion Cavs open up with win

Class A state champion Canterbury opened the boys soccer season with a 3-2 win against visiting Bishop Luers on Thursday.

The Cavaliers, who won the first two Class A state titles but moved up to 2A this year, scored all three of their goals in the second half to erase a 2-0 first-half deficit.

Canterbury, ranked No. 9 in 2A, got goals from Britt Watts, Jonathan VandenAkker and Seth Stratton. Watts and VandenAkker each added an assist.

Class A No. 2 Luers got goals came from Nick Strack and Jake Shifflett.


CARROLL 174, NEW HAVEN 218: Sarah Banister had a 39 to lead the Chargers at Willow Ridge. Kierstin Murphy added a 41.

Kori Thompson led the Bulldogs with a 47.

SOUTH ADAMS 176, SOUTH SIDE 203, NORTH SIDE 238: Sydney Willis led the Starfires with a 37 at McMillen.

Zoe Brehm had a 41 for the Archers.

WARSAW 180, WABASH 197, TIPPECANOE VALLEY 231: The Tigers improved to 6-0 with a couple of wins.

Elizabeth Meadows led Warsaw with a 44.

Boys soccer

CARROLL 2, BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 0: The host Chargers beat the Braves for the school’s 350th all-time win in 28 years of the school’s program.

Bayden Lee led Carroll with a goal and an assist.

LEO 4, NORWELL 0: Mason Wills had three goals and an assist for the host Lions.

Andrew VonGunten had the fourth goal.

Girls soccer

DEKALB 9, ANGOLA 1: Kacey Wells scored five goals for the host Barons.

DeKalb’s Madison VanWye added two goals.

BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 3, SOUTH ADAMS 0: Rebecca Kanpol scored all three goals for the host Braves.

Alaina Johnston had nine saves for the Starfires.


SAC TOURNAMENT: Defending champion Bishop Luers led the first day of the conference tournament at North Side with a 2-0 record. Also going 2-0 were Concordia and Bishop Dwenger. The tournament will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday.

CHURUBUSCO 3, GARRETT 1: The host Eagles picked up their first win of the season. Churubusco (1-1) got 11 kills and five digs from Alisha Farner.
