North Side holds off Concordia in opener

North Side staved off Concordia’s second-half rally to open the season with a victory.

The Class 5A No. 7 Redskins picked up a 26-19 win Friday night over the Cadets, who scored twice in the final 4 1/2 minutes to make things interesting.

North Side scored twice in the final minute of the first half with D’Marcus Moon running in from 12 yards out with 49 seconds left in the half and Mike Lovett finding Nick Cook for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds to play before halftime.

The Redskins pushed their lead to 20-0 with 9:05 to play in the third quarter when Latavion Guy returned an interception 54 yards for a score.

Concordia’s David Morrison scored from three yards out with 1:39 to play in the third quarter, but Tyvon Kelly scored on a 25-yard run with 6:31 to play to give North Side a 26-7 lead.

Morrison, who threw for 263 yards, connected on scoring passes of 14 and 8 yards to Jon Poore with the final touchdown coming with 47 seconds to play as the Cadets ran out of time.

BLUFFTON 39, NORTHFIELD 13: At Northfield, Malcom Marshall threw touchdown passes of 19, 17 and 61 yards to D’Wayne Eskridge, Micheal Pearson and Cody Harris, and he ran 3 yards for another score lead the Tigers to a season-opening victory.

Marshall completed 7 of 16 passes for 162 yards and ran 10 times for 56 yards.

MISHAWAKA MARIAN 44, DEKALB 7: At DeKalb, Chad Ramus provided one of the few bright spots for the Barons in the season opener.

Ramus recovered a Marian fumble for a touchdown with 3:46 to play in the opening half to cut DeKalb’s deficit to 14-7. But Marian scored 30 unanswered points after Ramus’ TD.

LEO 42, NORWELL 6: At Norwell, Jordan Hissong ran for two yards and threw for a touchdown, and Logan Leiter also ran for two scores in the Lions’ season opener.

Hissong finished with 137 rushing yards and his 6-yard scoring pass went to Chandler Fields, who returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown.

CHURUBUSCO 56, FREMONT 0: At Fremont, Cody Conwell ran for 225 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Eagles in the season opener.

Kane Johnson ran for 109 yards and scored two touchdowns for Churubusco, and Logan Harris scored two touchdowns and had an interception.

WAYNE 61, ANDERSON 27: At Wayne, Austin Yarbro led the Generals with 115 yards and the opening touchdown in the season opener. Jalen Thomas ran for 49 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 79 yards and two scores.

WARSAW 33, COLUMBIA CITY 14: At Warsaw, Tristan McClone rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers won their season opener.

Ethyn Bradley returned a punt 82 yards for a score for Warsaw, and Caleb Heckaman returned an interception for 28 yards for a touchdown.

Travis Herbst led the Eagles with 150 passing yards and two touchdowns.

WOODLAN 43, BELLMONT 18: At Woodlan, Corbin Smith threw for two touchdowns, and Jaylin Bennett ran for 242 yards and a TD to lead the Warriors in their season opener.

EAST NOBLE 43, NORTHROP 14: At Northrop, Brandon Mable ran for 115 yards and a score, and Harold Wolfe threw for 125 yards and three touchdowns and added two rushing TDs to lead the Knights.

ADAMS CENTRAL 54, BLACKFORD 7: At Adams Central, Cooper Hill threw for 134 yards with two touchdowns, and Stephen Eicher ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Flying Jets.

FAIRFIELD 35, CENTRAL NOBLE 21: At Central Noble, Brock Noe ran for two touchdowns and threw for a score as the Cougars fell in their season opener.
