Officer recovering at home after Steuben crash

A Steuben County sheriff's deputy who suffered serious injuries in a crash Aug. 24 was released from the hospital Friday night and is recovering in his home, Sheriff Tim Troyer said in a statement Saturday.

Deputy Adam Meeks, a reserve officer, was headed south on Indiana 327, responding to an emergency call, when he crested a hill and came upon another car going the same direction that had just pulled onto the road, the sheriff's department said.

In avoiding a collision, Meeks drove partly off the east side of the road and started to lose control. The squad car then crossed the road, went off the west side and struck a tree.

It took emergency crews more than an hour to free Meeks from the car. He was flown by helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

Meeks, 34, suffered a head injury and injuries to his ankle and wrist. As of Thursday, he was moved out of the intensive care unit into a regular hospital room, and now that he is home, he's improving every day, Troyer said.
