Woman critically injured in fight over campground dryer

An Illinois man was arrested Sunday at a Pierceton campground, charged with severely battering a Columbia City woman, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department said today.

Michael Patrick Zimny, 54, of Glenwood, Ill., was being held without bond on a charge of felony aggravated battery with substantial risk of death, the sheriff’s department said in a statement.

It said sheriff’s department deputies and emergency workers responded at 11 a.m. Sunday to a laundry/restroom facility at Jellystone Campground on County Road 200 North. They were responding to a report that a 24-year-old Columbia City woman had been injured, the statement said.

It said detectives were told the woman had entered the laundry and gotten into a confrontation with Zimny about the use of a dryer. She was injured in the front temple area, and lost consciousness while trying to return to her campsite, the statement said.

The woman was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition, it said. The statement said officers located and arrested Zimny.

The Pierceton Fire Department, Multi-Township EMS and the county prosecutor’s office assisted.
