Gerelle Ramone Borum was found in critical condition at the intersection of Rudisill and Indiana Avenue.

Josiah Christopher Thomas was sentenced to 45 years in prison Friday for the murder of Gerelle Ramone Borum.

Borum, 22, was walking down a sidewalk off Rudisill Boulevard near where Taylor University-Fort Wayne used to be on March 19 when Thomas, now 23, drove by in a pick-up truck. According to court documents, Thomas slowed down to make sure it was Borum, then shot him with a .32-caliber handgun loaded with hollow-point bullets, leaving him bleeding on the sidewalk surrounded by spent shell casings.

Thomas was arrested about a mile away a short time later and confessed to the murder, documents showed.

Under a plea agreement reached Aug. 2 and accepted by Superior Court Judge Fran Gull Friday, Thomas was sentenced to 55 years for murder, with 10 years of the sentence suspended. A charge of carrying a handgun without a license was dropped.
