TinCaps

  • TinCaps’ late-season collapse continues
The TinCaps lost for the ninth time in the last 13 games, falling 8-7 to the Lake County Captains at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio, on Thursday night.
  • Putting it all together
Jake Bauers lightheartedly taunted Franmil Reyes about Team USA’s win over the Dominican Republic on Wednesday in an exhibition basketball game.“We can’t win at all sports,” replied Reyes, a Dominican native.
  • Swinging, missing in rain
Tuesday night began with a 53-minute rain delay at Parkview Field and ended with more showers, but it may take more than rain to wash away the memories of the TinCaps' 5-1 loss to Great Lakes.

Bullpen

Fort Wayne closer: RP Roman Madrid 6-4, 2.72 ERA, 22 saves

South Bend closer: Enrique Burgos 2-2, 3.88 ERA, 17 saves

Skinny: Fort Wayne is 5-14 against South Bend this year, but all five of those wins came in the second half, including a series sweep at home in the final regular-season series between the two this year. ... Both teams swept their first-round playoff opponents: The TinCaps beat Bowling Green by a collective 15-6 margin, and the Silver Hawks took down Great Lakes 8-1 over two games.

Prediction: Going into the Bowling Green series, it was hard to bet on the TinCaps. Now, it’s hard not to. Fort Wayne looks better than it has all year and going up against a team that’s beaten the squad plenty will give the TinCaps some extra motivation. The Silver Hawks are also in the latter half of their pitching rotation, while Fort Wayne rolls out Fried and, if it goes to Game 3, gets its ace back on the mound.

Prediction: Fort Wayne wins the series 2-1.
