Vet from Ohio to return North Vietnamese soldier’s helmet

TOLEDO – A northern Ohio man who served in Vietnam is returning a souvenir he brought home and is giving it back to the family of a North Vietnamese soldier killed long ago.

John Wast of Toledo says that for the last 45 years he’s kept a helmet that he found lying next to a dead soldier on a battlefield in 1968.

Wast tells WTOL-TV in Toledo that he decided it was time to return the helmet.

The soldier had scratched his name in the helmet along with a drawing of a palm tree and a dove.

Wast worked with a Toledo-based group of veterans who raise money to build schools in Vietnam. They were able to find the soldier’s family near Hanoi.
