Indiana board of education makeup might be illegal

MUNSTER, Ind. – A spokeswoman for Gov. Mike Pence is responding to a newspaper report questioning whether there are more Republicans on the State Board of Education than allowed by law.

Spokeswoman Kara Brooks said Pence believes it’s time to take politics out of education.

Brooks said Marian University President Daniel Elsener was appointed to the board as an independent by then-Gov. Mitch Daniels in 2005 and continues to serve as an independent.

The Times of Munster reports ( that campaign finance records show Elsener has donated $10,575 to Republican candidates and business groups supporting Republicans since 2001 and voted in GOP primary elections nine out of 10 times since 1994.

Indiana law allows only six of the 10 members on the board to be from the same political party.
