For sale: Name on arena in Coliseum

Offer part of ongoing sponsorship efforts

– The naming rights for the arena inside Memorial Coliseum are on the market.

Reports swirled Tuesday morning about a proposal to sell the naming rights for the arena, home of the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL and Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League.

Randy Brown, Coliseum general manager, confirmed that the naming rights are being shopped around – and that they have been for years.

However, Brown reiterated that the naming rights will pertain only to the arena within the complex, and that the name of the complex itself will not be changed.

“The complex is the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum,” Brown said. “That’s our legal name and who we’ve been. The property is and will always be the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.”

Brown also said Coliseum officials have involved the Allen County Council of Veterans in the proposals to sell naming rights.

According to Brown, the council of veterans has given its blessing to do so. So far, no deal has been put into place, Brown said, though several proposals throughout the years have been offered to various organizations.

“We do proposals all the time,” said Brown, referring to various sponsorship offers, though he noted that the Coliseum puts out fewer proposals for naming rights.

Brown also said each proposal, whether for basic sponsorship or naming rights, varies based on the organizations involved in terms of dollar amounts and how the money might be spent.

“It has to be a good fit for the missions of the two entities involved,” Brown said of any proposal. “It has to be a good fit for the Coliseum.”

An official with Lutheran Health Network confirmed that the hospital organization had been approached by Memorial Coliseum about buying the naming rights.

“Lutheran Health Network has reviewed the proposal for naming rights and determined that pursuing this type of opportunity would be inconsistent with our health care mission,” wrote Geoff Thomas, spokesman for the hospital network, in a statement.

“Although we strongly support the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum and those who have served our country, this initiative fails to mesh with our priority to deliver quality health care while being good stewards of health care resources.”
