1 arrested in downtown beating

Fort Wayne police made a quick arrest in a beating that left a man in critical condition in the 100 block of West Wayne Street early this morning.

Dennis T. Tyson Jr., whose age was not given, is being held at Allen County Jail on a preliminary count of aggravated battery.

According to police, Tyson approached a man and a woman who were walking together in the area a little before 4 a.m.

Tyson confronted the two, and at some point the woman left. Then there was an altercation between Tyson and the man.

Police were called and when officers arrived they found the man lying in the middle of Wayne Street.

He was bleeding and unresponsive and taken to a hospital in serious condition. His condition was downgraded later to critical.

The man’s identity has not been released.

Like with an early morning shooting in the 3100 block of Lillie Street, officers and detectives canvassed the neighborhood, spoke with witnesses and were able to locate Tyson fairly quickly.

Not long after, they took him into custody.
