Fort Wayne Police officers and detectives who canvassed an east-side neighborhood in the wake of a fatal shooting early this morning were quickly rewarded for their efforts.
Within a short time of one man's death in the 3100 block of Lillie Street, police had a suspect in custody.
William E. Martin, 38, was arrested on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery in the shooting, which was reported to police at about 2:20 a.m.
Joseph D. Conwell, 22, died at Lutheran Hospital from a gunshot wound or wounds just after 3 a.m., the Allen County coroner's office said in a statement.
His death is the 31st homicide for Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2013, the statement said.
Martin was found in the same neighborhood after officers and detectives spoke with neighbors and began fanning out throughout the neighborhood, according to Officer Michael Joyner, a police spokesman.
"Quite frankly, it was good police work," Joyner said of the quick arrest. "It was great police work."
Detectives believe that a dispute between Martin and the deceased about a previous vandalism and a female precipitated the shooting, Joyner said.
Martin is being held at the Allen County Jail.
