Pedestrian critically injured crossing Lafayette

Police officers piece together what happened.

A pedestrian struck by a car as he tried to cross Lafayette Street along Paulding Road was in critical condition Wednesday morning, according to Fort Wayne police.

Officers were called to the intersection at 10:25 a.m. and found the man in the middle of the intersection, his body in the southbound lanes of the four-lane Lafayette.

The man has not been identified, but he was described as an "older man" and not a student at nearby Bishop Luers High School.

Police are still investigating what exactly happened, but a preliminary investigation points to the man trying to cross Lafayette from the east side of the street.

Witnesses told police that he had the light and walk sign when he began to cross, but by the time he came to the median in the middle of Lafayette the light changed.

An oncoming silver car driven by a female driver traveling south on Lafayette then had the green light, and it's likely she did not see the man as he stepped in front of her, a police spokesman at the scene said.

The woman, who has not been identified and who was driving in the far southbound lane, stopped immediately.

Though police said drugs and alcohol are likely not involved in the accident, toxicology tests were being performed as is protocol in such crashes.

The man was taken to a hospital in "extremely" critical condition, a police spokesman said.

The southbound lanes of Lafayette were closed beginning at Pettit Avenue, one block north of the crash, where Southgate Plaza is located.

Police also closed access to Paulding from Calhoun Street at the same time.
