Web letter: Aboite column hits nerve

As a seven year resident of Aboite Township, I feel I must respond to Frank Gray’s column, “Disrepair definition different in Aboite,” (Sept. 3).

What was his motive for writing the article? Did he really want to investigate vandalism or disrepair of a local playground? Or, did he see an opportunity to denigrate Aboite Township and its residents?

After reading the column, it is clear that Gray found an easy opportunity to take a shot at Aboite Township. Yes, many of us, who live in Aboite Township, care about our community. We take care of our homes; we take care of our yards, cutting the lawn, planting flowers and at times, even watering them; we wash our cars; we keep our homes painted. But, we also pass bond issues to support our schools and as a result, we have high performing schools. Our community has soccer, baseball, and football fields. And, we have a number of safe, fun playgrounds. We have high expectations for our surroundings and high standards of excellence for the amenities our community provides.

Yes, there are a number of professional people who live here. We worked hard, we might have gone to university and earned those degrees; we might have learned a trade; we might serve in the armed forces; but very few of us are trust fund recipients. As a result of hard work and life decisions, we get to live here in Aboite Township.

So, if all you can come up with as the basis of an article is derision and sarcasm, maybe, you need to dig a bit deeper. There are so many better issues to fill your column space.
