Freight train kills driver who ignored construction barriers

UNION MILLS, Ind. – Police in northern Indiana say a man was killed after driving his car around construction barriers and into the path of a freight train.

The crash happened about 3 a.m. Thursday at a rural crossing on Indiana 39 near the LaPorte County town of Union Mills.

WSBT-TV and WNDU-TV report the driver went around barriers closing the highway for construction and the vehicle might have become stuck on the tracks about 25 miles southwest of South Bend.

The state transportation department closed the highway effective Monday for a two-week project to repair two railroad crossings about a mile from each other.

The driver’s identity wasn’t immediately released.
