Chase suspect flees into Lakeside Park

A pickup truck driver trying to outrun police sent people scattering when he drove into Lakeside Park on a recent evening, according to court documents.

Matthew Dodds, 31, of Lima, Ohio, was charged Thursday with a felony count of resisting law enforcement and a misdemeanor count of criminal recklessness.

On Sept. 6, Fort Wayne police received a report of a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup truck that was speeding and running red lights.

An officer tried to pull over the pickup at Lawton Place and Spy Run Avenue, but the driver sped away, reaching speeds of about 55 mph on residential streets, court documents stated.

While heading east on Tennessee Avenue, the driver failed to stop at California Avenue and continued into Lakeside Park. At that point, police ended the pursuit, court documents said.

About 50 people were in the park, and when the truck came close to the playground, several people began running in different directions. Emergency dispatchers received reports that the truck drove through the playground and that the driver ran east around the rose garden, court documents said.

An officer later found the driver, identified as Dodds, at Vermont Avenue and Anthony Boulevard, court documents stated.

Dodds was being held Thursday at the Allen County Jail in lieu of $3,250 bail.
