Pedestrian struck on Lafayette ID’d

Fort Wayne police have identified the pedestrian who was struck by a car and critically injured Wednesday while crossing Lafayette Street at Paulding Road.

Thomas Highlen, 56, a city resident, remained in critical condition Thursday evening, Lutheran Hospital staff said.

Officers were called to the scene at 10:25 a.m. and found Highlen in the middle of the intersection, lying in the southbound lanes of Lafayette Street, a four-lane road.

A preliminary investigation indicates he was trying to cross Lafayette from the east side of the street. Witnesses told police he had the light and walk sign when he began to cross, but by the time he came to the median in the middle of Lafayette the light changed.

A silver car that had the green light struck Highlen as it was southbound on Lafayette. The driver, a woman, stopped immediately, police said. Her identity has not been released.
