Notre Dame's need for a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Purdue 31-24 on Saturday night cost the Irish (2-1) a spot in The Associated Press Top 25.
Notre Dame moved down to No. 22 in the AP poll after being ranked No. 21 last week. But the Irish remained at No. 21 in the USA Today coaches poll.
Michigan State (3-0), which the Irish play host to on Saturday, was the top vote getter not to crack the AP Top 25. The Spartans received 59 votes, just one shy of No. 25 Texas Tech.
Michigan State, which routed Youngstown State 55-17 Saturday, moved into the coaches poll at No. 24.
The Irish have three opponents ranked in the AP Top 25 with Stanford (2-0) at No. 5, Oklahoma (3-0) at No. 14 and Arizona State (2-0) entering the poll at No. 23 after not being ranked last week.
Notre Dame has four opponents ranked in the coaches poll with Stanford at No. 5, Oklahoma (3-0) at No. 12, Arizona State (2-0) entering the poll at No. 23 after not being ranked last week and Michigan State.
After Michigan State, Notre Dame plays host to Oklahoma on Sept. 28 then plays Arizona State in a "Shamrock Series" game on Oct. 5 in Arlington, Texas.
