BELLEVILLE, Ill. – An Indiana man accused in the death of an Illinois baby more than four decades ago has agreed to be brought back to Illinois to face the murder charge.
Gary Warwick, 62, waived extradition during a hearing Monday in Indiana’s Porter County, where he was arrested last Thursday.
It’s unclear how quickly he will be escorted to Illinois to face the St. Clair County murder charge related to the 1972 death of 1-year-old Joseph Henry Abernathy III.
Authorities allege Warwick was dating the child’s mother but wasn’t the child’s father.
Warwick was charged in 1973 in the baby’s death, but the case was later dismissed without explanation.
Investigators haven’t revealed what led to the new charges.
It’s unclear whether Warwick has an attorney.
He’s remains jailed on $5 million bond, Illinois authorities said.
