Notre Dame braces for Michigan State's Calhoun

SOUTH BEND – Michigan State defensive end Shilique Calhoun has grabbed plenty of attention in the Spartans' first three games.

Calhoun has three tackles for loss, two sacks, eight quarterback hurries, has intercepted a pass and recovered three fumbles. He has also scored three touchdowns, one off the interception and three off fumble recoveries.

"He's a good a player," said Irish quarterback Tommy Rees, who will have to deal with the 6-foot-4, 250-pound sophomore Saturday when No. 22 Notre Dame (2-1) plays host to Michigan State (3-0).

"There have been some good D-ends (at Michigan State) for a while. They've always been good up front. He just carries on that legacy. He's had a good start to the season."

Notre Dame left tackle Zack Martin said while Calhoun has gotten plenty of attention because of his touchdowns, there is plenty of players on Michigan State's defense that can hurt the Irish this weekend.

"(Defensive end Marcus) Rush is a great player," Martin said. "They got their three-technique at nose guard (Micajah Reynolds). (Linebacker Max) Bullough has been there for 10 years. Those guys are all good players.

"I'm not taking away anything, (Calhoun) can play, but their defense is very balanced and experienced. It's going to be a fun one."
