Unique experience for former area baseball standouts

A pair of former area high school baseball standouts will take part in a unique experience next week.

Pitcher Brandon Alger, who played at Leo and Indiana Tech, and Jason Van Meter, who played at Norwell, will be part of the San Diego Padres' fall instructional league team that will work out in the Dominican Republic.

The fall league runs from Sept. 24 to Oct. 17, according to the Padres' website.

Pitcher Max Fried and outfielder Hunter Renfroe, who played for the TinCaps this season, also will go to the Dominican Republic.
