GOP House Speaker Brian Bosma was presented with the Presidential Citation from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) last week during its Aviation Statehouse Update and Pilot Reception.
The AOPA's award is reserved for the most respected and impactful members of Congress and state legislators throughout the organization's 72-year history.
The citation was presented to Bosma in recognition of his "extraordinary dedication and perseverance" regarding the passage of the 2013 Aviation Revitalization Bill - securing additional general aviation employment and economic activity across the state of Indiana.
"I can't say enough about the work that Speaker Bosma has done on behalf of general aviation in Indiana," said AOPA President and CEO Mark Baker. "This new legislation is bringing new business and jobs to Indiana by making it more affordable for pilots and aircraft owners to operate in the state. Those sorts of immediate results aren't always easy to achieve in our current economy."
Prior to the passage of House Bill 1545, Indiana had the highest aviation fuel costs in the country, a press release from the association said. The aviation tax exemptions and restructurings have already had a positive impact on Indiana's economy.
"I am pleased that we were able to address job growth in Indiana through innovative economic incentives, like the restructuring of 'avgas'. It is imperative that Indiana not be considered a state that people simply "fly over" but rather a state that attracts, retains and recruits new business," Bosma said.
