Studebaker living tree sign to mark 75th year

NEW CARLISLE – A living tree sign that has commemorated South Bend’s relationship with Studebaker for 75 years will be celebrated this weekend.

The St. Joseph County Parks Department is hosting the Studebaker Tree Diamond Jubilee Sunday at Bendix Woods County Park. The event will feature tours of the former Studebaker Club House, an ice cream social, hayrides and Studebaker cars.

The South Bend Tribune reports that a fundraising effort to restore the pine trees that together spell out the Studebaker name as seen from overhead has raised nearly $40,000.

The original fundraising goal for tree restoration was $45,000, but parks director Evie Kirkwood says that could rise to about $50,000 if more equipment is needed for the restoration.
