Fort Wayne police officer's name added to IN memorial

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Two more names have been added to the Indiana Law Enforcement and Firefighters Memorial.

A ceremony Wednesday evening saluted Fort Wayne police officer Kenneth Hayden and Wabash Valley Correctional Facility guard Timothy Betts as their names joined more than 700 others on the memorial near the Indiana Statehouse.

The Indianapolis Star reports Betts died in August 2012 of a heart attack while moving an inmate at the prison near Carlisle.

Hayden died in 1989 from complications of a gunshot wound he had received during a robbery call years earlier. Officials didn't realize until recently that his death qualified as a line-of-duty death.

Gov. Mike Pence told those at the ceremony that the names on the memorial are men and woman who've give the ultimate service.
