Hoosiers land Robert Johnson for 2014 class

Robert Johnson, a 6-foot-3 combo guard out of Benedictine (Va.) School, announced his commitment to Indiana on Friday.

The 2014 prospect is the No. 79 player in the country, according to the 247Composite, a service provided by 247Sports.com that compiles the rankings of major recruiting sites into one average. He is ranked as high as No. 42 overall by Rivals.com and is just outside the top-50 for 247Sports.com and Scout.com.

Johnson, who averaged 20.2 points per game during the Nike-sponsored Elite Youth Basketball League's Peach Jam this summer and participated in the National Basketball Player's Association camp during the summer, also considered North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia.

His commitment is important, as it breaks a string of recruiting mishaps for Tom Crean and the Hoosiers in this class. IU lost Arsenal Tech forward Trey Lyles and former Bishop Luers guard James Blackmon, Jr., who committed during their freshman seasons. The Hoosiers also missed out on a few key targets en route to this commitment, and two this week alone in junior college forward Stephen Hurt and top-25 guard Isaiah Whitehead.

For more on Johnson's commitment and what's to come for the Hoosiers, see Saturday's print edition of The Journal Gazette.
