Officer injured in crash named

Fort Wayne police have identified the officer who suffered serious injuries late Thursday when his squad car crashed into a pole.

About 10 p.m., officer Michael McEachern was driving south on Wayne Trace, just north of Drexel Avenue. He was responding to an emergency call, with the squad car’s lights and sirens on, police said.

McEachern lost control of the car for unknown reasons and went off the west side of the road, striking a small tree and a pole next to a former gas station.

The crash left McEachern pinned in the car. Rescue workers freed him, and he was taken to a hospital, where he remained Friday in serious condition, police said.

According to McEachern’s personnel file, he was suspended for a day without pay because he missed a day of work in 2012. He received a letter of reprimand for what was determined to be a preventable crash in 2006 and another letter of reprimand regarding his seat belt and shoulder harness in 2008, his file showed.

It’s not clear whether he was wearing a seat belt at the time of Thursday’s crash, which Fort Wayne police are investigating.
