Boy, 2, pulled from pond, dies

Whitley County, state DNR look into accident

A 2-year-old child was pronounced dead at a hospital after being pulled from a Whitley County pond Saturday afternoon.

Emergency units responded to 8009 W. 300 South near South Whitley after receiving a 911 call about 1:40 p.m., according to a statement released by conservation officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

When they arrived, family members were performing CPR on a 2-year-old boy. The child, not a resident of the address, was transported to Parkview Whitley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m., according to the statement. His name was not released.

Outside with family members, the child was discovered missing only minutes after he was last seen, according to the DNR. He was found by family submerged but partly visible in a small pond. The child was pulled from the water less than 10 minutes after he was discovered missing, the statement said.

The incident is being viewed as an accident but is under investigation by conservation officers and the Whitley County Coroner’s Office, according to the statement.

Assisting were the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, the Cleveland Township Fire Department and the Whitley County EMS.
