Fund drive under way to assist injured officer

– A local credit union will accept donations to help a Fort Wayne police officer injured in a crash last week.

Late Thursday, officer Michael McEachern was driving south on Wayne Trace, just north of Drexel Avenue. He was responding to an emergency call when he lost control of his cruiser for unknown reasons and went off the west side of the road, city police said.

The car struck a small tree and a pole next to a former gas station. Rescue workers had to free McEachern, 37, from the car, and he was taken from the scene in serious condition, police said. McEachern, who's been a police officer since 2005, was in good condition Tuesday at Lutheran Hospital, hospital staff said.

Donations can be made at all eight branches of the Fire Police City County Federal Credit Union. Those branches are at 3306 N. Clinton St.; the Rousseau Centre, 1 E. Main St., Suite 032; Citizens Square, 200 E. Berry St., Suite 95; 1802 Inwood Drive; 7505 Maplecrest Road; 10123 Lima Road; Jefferson Pointe, 4705 Illinois Road, Suite 118; and 907 E. Tillman Road. Anyone with questions about the fund can call the credit union at 484-2102.
