Woman, 2 pets escape west-side house fire

Firefighters saved two pets from a house fire Tuesday evening west of Fort Wayne, according to fire officials.

Passers-by saw the fire and alerted a woman in the home at 1334 Wescott Drive, off Bass Road, said Chief Gale Stelzer II of the Aboite Township Fire Department.

The woman safely escaped, and the passers-by reported the blaze at 5:30 p.m. When fire crews arrived, the house, an attached garage and a car in the driveway were ablaze, Stelzer said.

Firefighters rescued a cat and a hamster from the house, the chief said.

It took about 20 minutes to get control of the fire, which caused extensive damage. The flames melted the siding of a neighboring house but did not spread, Stelzer said.

The cause remains under investigation.
