Woman critical in drive-by shooting

Passenger in car unharmed; police seek tips on SUV

– A drive-by shooting in southeast Fort Wayne left a woman with several gunshot wounds Wednesday evening, city police said.

It was the third shooting in the past week in which someone was critically injured.

Just before 7:30 p.m., police officers responded to reports of a shooting, and they found the injured woman in the driver's seat of a gray Chrysler parked in the 4500 block of Warsaw Street, said Jason Anthony, a police spokesman.

Medics took the woman, who was conscious, from the scene in serious condition, and at a hospital, a doctor downgraded her condition to critical, Anthony said.

Witnesses told police that a dark-colored sport utility vehicle going south on Warsaw pulled alongside the car and someone in the SUV opened fire.

The SUV was last seen headed south on Warsaw. The windows on the passenger side may have been shot out, Anthony said.

The victim's friend, a man, was in the passenger seat of the Chrysler at the time of the shooting. He was not wounded, and detectives interviewed him along with other witnesses, Anthony said.

Investigators canvassed the neighborhood for evidence. No weapons were found, Anthony said.

Late Wednesday, police had no suspects and did not know of a motive for the shooting. Anyone with information about the SUV involved is asked to call the Fort Wayne Police Department at 427-1222.
