Old 24 might be renamed to honor ex-lawmaker

– An 11-mile stretch of highway near New Haven is being considered as a memorial to former state representative Phyllis Pond.

Allen County commissioners agreed Friday to rename the road Old 24. The roadway was previously U.S. 24, but became a secondary throughway when the new Fort to Port four-lane corridor that connects Fort Wayne with the Port of Toledo opened.

“I think it would be nice if we consider designating that portion of the highway (Old 24) in memory of Phyllis Pond,” Commissioner Nelson Peters said. “It would be a nice way to honor” Pond and her family, he said.

The other commissioners, Linda Bloom and Therese Brown, agreed. Details of the memorial will be discussed at a later date.

A teacher for East Allen County Schools before she retired, Pond spent 35 years in the statehouse. She died Sunday.

Mailing addresses along the 11-mile stretch will change to Old 24, Peters said, but would not change again with the Pond memorial.

It would be similar to a 2007 procedure when the county designated Airport Expressway the Rep. Ben GiaQuinta Airport Expressway as a way to honor the retired state representative, Peters said.

Old 24 runs from a cul-de-sac west of Georgian Drive to the Ohio state line, while the new highway stretches from Interstate 469 to the state line.

Friday morning’s meeting was held an hour earlier than normal so commissioners could attend Pond’s funeral. The moment of silence that precedes every meeting was held in honor of Pond.
