A Fort Wayne man is in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle last night while repairing a blown out tire on the shoulder of U.S. 30 in Van Wert County in northwest Ohio.
Mark A. Campbell, 30, of Fort Wayne, was driving a commercial towing unit for Blue Eagle Towing and traveling west on U.S. 30 when his driver's side tire blew out, according to a statement issued by the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Van Wert Post.
Campbell pulled onto the shoulder of the road and began fixing the tire until 9:40 p.m. when he was struck by a second vehicle also traveling west on U.S. 30.
James H. Yoder, 18, of Dalton, Ohio, was in the right lane of U.S. 30 when his vehicle passed the disabled tow truck and struck Campbell kneeling next to the damaged tire, the patrol said.
Campbell was seriously injured and transported to St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima, Ohio. Yoder and his three passengers were not injured in the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol's Van Wert Post is investigating the crash, and no charges have been filed at this time.
