Police and fire

Fort Wayne firefighters leave the upper story of a house at 312 E. Masterson Ave. that caught fire early Sunday morning.

Fire likely totals condemned house

Fire damaged a vacant and condemned house at 312 E. Masterson Ave. on Sunday morning.

Fort Wayne Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Pinkham said one firefighter had minor injuries and was taken to Lutheran Hospital.

The fire department received the call at 7:52 a.m., Pinkham said, and they were on the scene at 7:56 a.m. They got the fire under control at 8:12 a.m., but it was a heavy fire, and the house is probably totaled, Pinkham said. Wisps of smoke were still coming from the back side of the house around 8:30 a.m.

The fire damaged the first and second floors from the front to the back, and the staircase fell through, so firefighters used a ladder outside the house to reach the second floor.

Osman Morales, who lives behind the house, said it is the second time this house has caught fire. The last time was about three months ago.

Pinkham was unable to confirm a previous fire. But he said the house has been condemned, and the fire is still under investigation.
