Police have arrested a man in connection with a rash of brazen burglaries in neighborhoods on the city’s south side, Fort Wayne Chief Rusty York said Tuesday.
York did not identify the man arrested but said he was in jail Tuesday evening, charged with one of the burglaries. The chief said more information would be released today.Wednesday
“Using our automated fingerprint system, we were able to lift a palm print off a windowsill, and were able to match it to an individual that we have arrested,” York told the City Council during its meeting Tuesday.
The break-ins began near the end of August in Southwood Park, but those mainly involved someone busting the locks to detached garages.
In September, though, someone or some people began cutting the window screens to homes at night – while people inside were sleeping.
They usually stole cash or items that could be sold quickly – they never took debit or credit cards that could be traced to them.
Along with Southwood Park, the Harrison Hill, Fairmount and Oakdale neighborhoods were hit by burglars with similar methods.
