Ailing farmer gets harvest help from community

GARRETT – Farmers in northeast Indiana are coming to the aid of a colleague who is undergoing cancer treatments.

Dozens of farmers will help harvest 400 acres of soybeans for Garry Thrush while he receives chemotherapy for leukemia.

Larry Kummer told The Star of Auburn ( ) that he rounded up 11 combines, three semis and dozens of workers to help the Thrush family. Others have donated food for workers and fuel for the farm equipment.

The group planned to harvest the soybeans in four to five hours on Tuesday, but fog prevented them from working. They were set to try again Wednesday.
