Field gets facelift at Notre Dame Stadium

Brian Kelly has not been shy about saying what kind of surface he wants Notre Dame to play on.

The fourth-year coach has wanted the grass at Notre Dame Stadium replaced with Field Turf since he got there.

While Kelly isn't getting his wish, the Irish (3-2) – who play No. 22 Arizona State (3-1) on Saturday in Arlington, Texas – are getting new grass for the rest of the season.

"We have brought in turf from goal line to goal line and from number to number," Kelly told reporters Thursday. "We are pretty much re-doing the field. As you know, it was in poor condition so early in the season. So we have really stripped it and in the process of putting down sod right now. And we are hopeful that it is going to give us a better surface."

Kelly said getting new grass was not his call, just like replacing the surface is not his call.

"I have made it pretty clear what I want for a surface and that has not come to fruition at this point," Kelly said. "We are going to put the grass down and hope that that is going to get us through the season."
