Steuben County home badly damaged in fire

Firefighters extinguished a house fire Thursday afternoon near West Otter Lake in Steuben County, according to the Orland Fire Department.

Shortly after 4 p.m., fire crews from Orland, Salem, Angola and Hudson were dispatched to the blaze at 9500 County Road W. 100 S.

Crews quickly doused the flames that had damaged the kitchen, attic and exterior of the house. The cost of the damage was estimated at $45,000, the fire department said.

The homeowner told firefighters the kitchen stove caught fire while his family was cooking. After trying unsuccessfully to extinguish the flames, he escaped the home with his family. No one was hurt, the fire department said.
