FORT WAYNE – Blackhawk Christian junior Jaycee Bunner dodged the rain showers to shot a 1-over 73 Saturday and lead the area contingent at the girls state golf tournament at The Legends Golf Club in Indianapolis.
Bunner’s 73, combined with an opening round of 83, left her with a 36-hole total of 156. That was good for a tie for 22nd with Madison Chestnutt and Katie Willenbrink of Penn, Morgan Brown of Lafayette Central Catholic and Elizabeth Schuler and Lucy Stevens of Zionsville.
The other two area golfers didn’t fare quite as well.
South Adams sophomore Sydney Willis shot an 84 to go with an 83 to finish at 167, which placed her alone in 49th place.
Warsaw senior Nichole Lalonde recovered from an opening 94 to shoot 87, a 181 total that put her alone in 78th.
Harley Dubsky of Valparaiso claimed medalist honors, following her opening 68 with a 76 for a 144 total. That was one stroke better than Mary Ellen Romero of Hamilton Southeastern (71-74 – 145) and two strokes clear of Makenzie Curtis of Carmel (75-71 – 146).
Curtis and Maggie Rees, who tied for fourth at 72-75 – 147, led the Greyhounds to the team title with a 36-hole total of 604.
That was 27 strokes better than runner-up Penn, which finished with 631.
In addition to winning medalist honors, Dubsky also won the IHSAA mental attitude award.
