The finished custom crochet hook handle made by Jennifer Ellingwood of Day by Day Crochet.

Watching a custom-made hook handle in process

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of watching an artisan I've admired from afar work her craft.

Jennifer Ellingwood, a former Berne resident, returned to Berne for the Lehman Park Harvest Festival.

I've been following Ellingwood, owner of Day by Day Crochet, on Facebook for some time and she has an insanely long wait list for her custom-made items.

So when I heard she was going to be so close to Fort Wayne, I had to go find her and place my custom order.

I had an idea in mind for a handle with a rose on it and boy, did she deliver.

Bonus: I was able to watch the process (and she allowed me to take video of the process).

I couldn't be happier with the finished product. Jennifer wasn't completely happy with it when it came out of the oven, and I was unable to wait around for it, so she shipped it to me so she could perfect it before I got it in my hot little hands.

I pulled together some of that video to share (excuse the background noise, they were auctioning off baked goods).

I will say this about the hook: As I watched it take shape, I feared it would be uncomfortable to work with, too heavy, or too much detail would bother my hands. I am happy, however, to report that it's a dream to work with.
