College football preview: Manchester at Defiance

Records: Manchester (1-4, 1-2 HCAC), Defiance (2-3, 2-1)

Scouting report: The Spartans finally broke through last week, pounding Bluffton 34-7 behind Austin Adams’ 140 yards rushing and two touchdowns and a defense that limited Bluffton to 36 rushing yards. Defiance seems to have its feet under it, too, outscoring its last two opponents (Anderson and Earlham) by a combined 77-7 score after opening the season 0-3. In those two victories, the Yellow Jackets have given up a combined 41 rushing yards, forced a combined 11 turnovers and held their opponents to a combined 8 of 35 on third-down conversions. The Defiance defense will be a test for a Manchester offense that’s converting just 40 percent of its third downs (35 of 88) and has turned the ball over 10 times in five games. One bright note: Defiance, while giving up just 235.4 yards per game, yields 176.8 of those through the air – and Manchester quarterback Nick Williams comes in with 739 passing yards and three touchdowns.
