Notre Dame forward Zach Auguste suffers injury

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey's plans to move away from a four-guard lineup took a hit before the season started.

Sophomore forward Zach Auguste suffered a broken left hand at practice Oct. 10 and is expected to miss four to six weeks, the university announced Thursday.

The 6-foot-10 Auguste was expected to be a key part of the Irish's frontline rotation with Tom Knight and Garrick Sherman.

"This is really unfortunate for Zach that he suffered this injury because he had such a great summer and preseason for us," Brey said in a statement. "Zach is going to be a key for us on the frontline this season. I love the energy and passion he has brought to practice. Since the end of last season, he's been really focused on improving all aspects of his game and he's really matured. Zach knows and understands that he's a big piece of the puzzle for us this year and that we are counting on him at both ends of the floor."

Auguste played in 25 of 35 games last season while battling ankle injuries. He averaged 3.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 10.7 minutes as a freshman.

Auguste is expected to miss Notre Dame's exhibition games against Indianapolis on Oct. 28 and Tusculum on Nov. 1. The Irish open the season at home against Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 8.
