Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has fun with rankings

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly had some fun during his Sunday teleconference when he was asked about his team not being ranked in either the Associated Press Top 25 or the USA Today coaches poll.

"Must be a conspiracy," Kelly jokingly said.

The Irish improved to 5-2 after Saturday night's 14-10 home win over USC.

Notre Dame got 82 votes in the AP Top 25, putting it 35 votes behind No. 25 Nebraska. The Irish got 62 votes in the coaches poll, putting it 89 votes behind No. 25 Central Florida.

The Irish are unranked with a record of at least 5-2 for just the fourth time in school history, according to the AP. Three times the Irish were 5-2 and unranked: in 2008 under Charlie Weis, in 2004 under Tyrone Willingham and in 1951 under Frank Leahy, when the Irish dropped out after a 35-0 loss to Michigan State. The Irish also were unranked at 5-1-1 in 1982 under Gerry Faust.

When Kelly, who votes in the coaches poll, was asked if he felt his team was a Top 25 squad, he said: "I've had us in the top 25."
