1 arrested after burglary call leads police to meth lab

One man was arrested Thursday after police responded to a burglary but instead found a methamphetamine lab and chemicals used to make meth in a south-side home, police said.

Police were called at 5:49 p.m. to a burglary in the 4400 block of Weisser Park Avenue.

The resident of the home, James C. Francis, 24, had called out to a neighbor that he had two people trapped in his basement, police said.

Officers found no intruders and no sign of forced entry, but they did find a one-pot meth lab, evidence of several prior meth labs and chemicals used to make meth, police said.

Francis was arrested on felony charges of manufacturing meth, possession of two or more precursors, maintaining a common nuisance and dumping controlled substance waste. He also faces misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The bust is the 55th meth lab Fort Wayne police have investigated this year.
