Zimmer earnings slide 13 percent

Zimmer Holdings Inc. on Thursday reported third-quarter earnings of $154.4 million, or 90 cents per diluted common share, a 13 percent decline from the $178.1 million, or $1.02 a share posted for 2012’s third quarter.

The Warsaw-based manufacturer of orthopedic devices also reported third-quarter net sales of $1.07 billion, a 5 percent increase over the same period a year ago.

Zimmer took pre-tax charges of $46.4 million in special items and $43.8 million in global restructuring, litigation, acquisitions and other items. The company also spent $17.5 million cash to acquire 200,000 of its shares.
