Pet killed in blaze on Hazelhurst Drive

A fire Friday heavily damaged a Hazelhurst Drive home on the city’s west side, and a dog in the home died, Fort Wayne firefighters said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said.

Firefighters were called to 4340 Hazelhurst Drive at 11:10 a.m. Friday and found heavy flames in the one-story house. Crews fought the fire defensively because of a structural collapse, and the fire was under control in about 20 minutes, the fire department said.

American Electric Power and Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control assisted at the scene of the fire, which remains under investigation, the department said.
