Notre Dame returns to coaches poll

Notre Dame returned to the rankings in the USA Today coaches poll, but the Irish fell just shy of returning to the Associated Press Top 25.

The Irish improved to 6-2 with Saturday's 45-10 road win over Air Force, and that was good enough to put Notre Dame at No. 25 in the coaches poll.

Notre Dame remained unranked in the AP poll, coming up a vote shy of the No. 25 spot.

Arizona State (5-2), which the Irish defeated 37-34 on Oct. 5, is at the 25th spot. The Sun Devils received 133 votes, while the Irish picked up 132 votes.

Michigan State (7-1) is No. 24 with 166 votes. Notre Dame defeated the Spartans 17-13 on Sept. 21.

The only opponent remaining on the Irish's schedule that is still ranked in No. 6 Stanford (7-1).
