Anyway ... the update is this: Jeff Gordon still has a chance to be the Man.

Jimmie Johnson's car owner hasn't won a Sprint Cup title since 2001, but after winning at Martinsville Sunday, he's third in the points, just 27 adrift of leader Matt Kenseth with three races to run. So, yeah, he's in the hunt for this fifth title.

If he pulls it off, it would be remarkable in more than one regard. Gordon, remember, was added by NASCAR as a 13th driver in the Chase after it was determined he was unfairly denied a spot after all the points manipulation that went on at Richmond.

So he got in on a pass, essentially. But it's hard to say he doesn't deserve to be there now.
