Striking of boy, 3, brings felony count

A Fort Wayne man accused of battering a 3-year-old boy is now facing a felony charge.

Allen County prosecutors filed one count of battery against John D. Kartholl, 19, of the 6000 block of West Cook Road, on Monday.

An Allen County police officer called to a home in Washington Township this month found a child who had blood behind both his ears, a red mark on his face and a bruise on his upper arm.

According to court documents, witnesses at the home said Kartholl had struck the child. He then left when police were called.

Kartholl later agreed to speak with officers but maintained that he accidentally injured the child.

In court documents, Kartholl claimed that he was trying to strike a dog but struck the child instead.
