FORT WAYNE – Board of Public Works members Wednesday approved a $798,211 contract with S&S Directional Boring for water main replacement.
The contract is likely the last large water main replacement project of this year and one that takes the city over its commitment to bid the replacement nine miles of aging water mains this year using the 2012 rate increase, officials said.
The project will replace 7,618 feet of pipe – nearly a mile and a half – on various streets in the Northcrest subdivision, taking this years total up to 9.1 miles.
The work includes replacing 15 fire hydrants and 21 valves, plugging abandoned water mains and re-connecting 165 homes.
The contract also requires approval by City Council.
The board also approved an agreement to extend sewer service to 17 homes on Mars Street, off Tonkel Road north of Union Chapel Road. The city will pay for the project and be reimbursed through special fees on the sewer service bills that residents pay under the terms of the citys septic elimination policy.
Also approved was a donation of right of way at the citys radio shop, a former fire station building at Coliseum Boulevard and Parnell Avenue. The right of way will allow the Indiana Department of Transportation to build a right-turn lane for west-bound Coliseum traffic turning north onto Parnell, part of a project to add travel lanes to Coliseum between Crescent Avenue and Parnell.
