3 matchups to watch

IU defense vs. Minnesota quarterbacks: The Golden Gophers employ a two-quarterback system with Philip Nelson and Mitch Leidner, much like the Hoosiers use sophomore Nate Sudfeld and redshirt sophomore Tre Roberson. IU has been poor against dual-threat quarterbacks, including James Franklin of Missouri, Connor Cook of Michigan State and Devin Gardner of Michigan. All three of those quarterbacks had career days in wins over the Hoosiers. Nelson and Leidner can both run. Leidner, a 6-foot-4 freshman, has six rushing touchdowns as well as one passing, while Nelson, a sophomore, has five on the ground and four through the air.

IU vs. Minnesota’s momentum: The Golden Gophers are fresh off two striking wins: a road victory against Northwestern and a home win against Nebraska. Both have been Top 25 teams this season. Coach Jerry Kill, who has suffered two seizures during games this season, has been a rallying point for Minnesota, and the team is playing with aggression and emotion. The Hoosiers will have to stem that tide, but should get a boost of their own thanks to the homecoming atmosphere and the fact that this is a must-win game for IU if it hopes to keep its bowl chances alive.

Sudfeld vs. Roberson: Coach Kevin Wilson lamented the approach his co-No. 1 quarterbacks have taken in recent weeks during his weekly news conference Monday. Both Sudfeld and Roberson have played in every game, and their roles have varied in each. It’s understandable that those changes could throw one or the other off, but for IU to be successful against the Golden Gophers and beyond, the two need to be able to flow in and out of the game seamlessly.

Prediction: Minnesota 24, Indiana 21
